ZINC TREATMENT FOR ACNE VULGARIS

Acne vulgaris, also known as common acne, is a problem that affects the lives of many teenagers as well as adults.Pimples and breakouts can persist into adulthood , as if teenage acne is not embarrassment enough. People are always on the search for a treatment of acne that will ensure control and decrease breakouts. For many people, controlling acne is a constant process because most of the time, treatment is only a momentary reprieve from the symptoms. This is the reason that the most effective treatments of acne are ones that wipe out pimples as well as maintain optimal health for the body, so that the rate of future breakouts is low. Taking acne medication for one's lifetime is rather excessive for most people, It is for this reason that a lot of people are looking for alternatives to antibiotics in the form of zinc supplements. However, the question remains- Does zinc work?

Some people think that zinc heals acne. Zinc can stop many of the conditions that results in acne. Since acne consumes a great amount of critical elements of skin including zinc, you should consume more zinc to repair. Increasing dieatary zinc or taking a zinc supplement is low risk and should help cure acne.

One of the reasons that it is believed that zinc heals acne is, when taken enough, zinc will reduce inflammation. This helps immune function, and keeps hormone levels in balance. Recommended daily dosage of zinc is 30 mg a day. If you are taking zinc for more than 30 days, add 2 mg of copper.

Zinc is an antibacterial agent. It's a crucial element in the oil procuding glands of the skin. If your diet is low in zinc, this may cause acne breakouts.

Zinc can be found in many forms. The forms of zinc sulfate or zinc gluconate helps prevention of acne. Zinc has benefits for blemishes, helping heal them. Zinc have another positive effect on the skin, which is reducing androgenic hormonal effects. You should begin to eat more food that contain zinc. A couple of studies have been made to compare zinc to antibiotic tetracycline and it is observed that zinc is as positive effects similar to tetracycline.

Do not forget that deficiencies of vitamin A, and essential fatty acids such as linoleic besides deficiency of zinc can cause acne. Eat foods containing zinc such as sesame seeds, liver, soybeans, oysters, herring, sunflower seeds, wheat germ, egg yolk and lamb.

To see some positive results, you should take zinc for one or two months. This should reduce the risk of the recurrence of acne greatly. Zinc can also be used topically. You should have great results within three months. Do not forget to take copper if you take zinc for an extented period. Zinc is also a crucial element in the production of collagen, elastin, new placement cells and tissue substances. These all make up the repair process in acne infected sites.

Zinc is a mineral and it is believed that it has curative properties on a skin where there are acne growths. It is believed that zinc can reduce the symptoms of acne. However on the other hand, many studies have indicated that this is not the case. So is there a connection between the two? Let us find out.

According to research carried out in recent years, zinc has the same properties of antibiotics such as tetracycline and it can fight the acne bacteria efficiently. And that too without the negative effects of antibiotics. Reportedly, zinc also enhances the immunity of the body. I wanted to find out the truth and so I carried out experimentation for 7 long years. And after my research, I have been able to find out the zinc and acne connection.

When a group of researchers conducted a study on how young people usually perceive the cause or causes of acne, it was revealed that most of them tend to correlate its growth and prevalence with their diet and personal hygiene. The study being cited is that which came out in the article of Rigopoulos and company, which was released in 2007 at the journal compilation for the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. The research was able to note that a majority of the students who participated in their study believe that certain dietary patterns do exacerbate the prevalence of acne, at least as far as they are concerned. Notably, eating foods which reportedly contain fats such as chocolate, sauces, pizza, hamburgers were implicated by the students. Herein it would be palpable to believe that certain dietary factors are responsible for the occurrence of acne; and this is indeed a very popular worldview to speak of. Whilst admittedly, many studies, such as those mentioned in the Survey of Related Literature, have tried to challenge the efficacy of dietary factors in explaining the incidence of acne, a fair amount of literature still maintain that eating habits, as well as particular patterns resulting to nutritional deficiencies, do in fact cause or exacerbate the prevalence of acnes.

When it comes to using zinc for acne, this mineral is the shining star. Zinc tackles acne problems in many different ways:

  • It helps to reduce inflammation and inflammatory lesions
  • It kills the main bacteria that’s associated with acne (Propionibacterium acnes)
  • It causes changes in the skin environment making it a “hostile” environment for bacteria
  • One study even suggests it might help improve the effectiveness of antibiotic treatments in people who are antibiotic resistant.

This last point is very promising for using zinc for acne. In a small study, 30 acne patients received 30 mg of zinc gluconate -- for acne treatment -- for two months. Results showed improved efficacy of antibiotic treatment (erythromycin) in patients who were antibiotic resistant. In addition, patients also saw a significant reduction in inflammatory lesions.(Dreno B et al 2005).

Is Zinc for Acne -- Is it as Effective As Tetracycline?

A large double-blind study compared the efficacy of tetracycline – a common acne drug – to oral zinc for acne treatment.

In this study, 332 people were either given 30 mg of zinc daily or 250 mg of tetracycline daily. The results showed that at 250 mgs, tetracycline was no more effective than zinc.(Br J Dermatol. 1977;97:561-566).

Dosage of Zinc for Acne Treatment

Most studies found 30 mgs of zinc daily, effective for acne treatment. The type of zinc most commonly used in the studies was zinc gluconate.

This form is better absorbed than zinc sulfate. Zinc picolinate, acetate and monomethionine are also well absorbed and are good choices.

If you decide to try zinc for acne, make sure to take a multiple vitamin that contains at least 1-3 mg of copper per daily serving.

Caution Using Zinc for Acne

Long term zinc supplementation could cause a copper deficiency. Also, if you’re taking antibiotics, take zinc supplements at least 2 hours before or afterward and always take zinc with food, as it could upset an empty stomach.
